Mathews and Vas are best mates who grew up in the eastern Sydney suburb of Maroubra, a tight-knit surfing community and turf ground of the infamous Bra Boy’s. As a teenager, the boys would follow the likes of Koby Abberton and other bra boys in their adrenaline driven pursuit to locate and conquer monster slabs. Today, Matthews and Vas are both highly respected, world-class athletes. As pro surfers, they’ll study global weather and storm patterns and when the swell predicts monster waves, they’ll be on route with a crew. Mark earned the respect of the global surfing community at Pipeline, Hawaii back in 2007 when he conquered one of the best barrels ever ridden at Pipeline. Recently the pair broke records when taking on the insane night surf at “OURS” surfing break off Botany Bay NSW. Both survived the shark infested waters and deadly rocky break to tell the tale and made it into the record books.
For the past three years, award-winning director Macario De Souza has been documenting the lives of Mathews and Vas as they travel the world in pursuit of their personal and professional goals. “Fighting Fear” is a feature-length documentary based on Mathews and Vas, it’s an inspirational story of achievement, courage and friendship which documents the strength of character that is required to fight their personal fears as they strive to reach the pinnacle of their hazardous professions. Mathews says the making of “Fighting Fear” has been an incredible journey, Richie is one of those guys who “whatever you want to do…he is going to push you harder”.
